Traveling With Toddlers: Things You Need To Consider

Anyone with a young family knows that coordinating everything for any kind of journey can be a nightmare. Families with toddlers need to carry so much paraphernalia with them that it can just seem to be too much of a hassle to go anywhere, particularly for those who are on vacation, as they may not have their own car with them. Rental cars are often the best way for a family to travel around while on vacation.

There are vast amounts of things that need to be taken along when traveling anywhere with a child. These include things like diapers for toddlers who are not yet toilet-trained, wipes, bottles, food, strollers, extra clothes in case of an accident, toys to keep them amused and extras such as beach buckets, balls, pack n’ plays and other beach gear.

All of this, plus all the items needed for other members of the family, can prove to be something of a handful (or more!) when trying to travel anywhere. The good news is that many rental cars now come with a large amount of storage space in the trunk and these things can be easily packed in and removed when needed.

One tip when travelling in a car with toddlers is to keep a bag in the car at all times that is filled with items for them, such as diapers and wipes. This way you can avoid endless packing and unpacking of these things, as there is always a bag ready in the car and it can just be topped off when needed. Keeping a few toys in the car will also be useful for long journeys, as not every toddler can be relied upon to sleep along the way.

Even packing the items themselves should be done with extra care. Everyone knows that when traveling with toddlers it is not possible to simply pack a bag and go. Everything needs to be planned and packing should begin several days before the trip. This way items can all be ticked off the list as it goes into the bag and then just checked the day before departure. Using a rental car means that the car can be picked up early, packed and be ready to go.

Packing items such as toiletries or medicines should be done in separate bags to prevent spillages over clothes, and it is always a good idea to pack a small container of laundry detergent, so that small items of laundry can be washed at the hotel if needed.

When using rental cars, child car seats will need to be arranged in advance. These seats are often in demand and MUST be reserved in advance. Ensure that the rental car company will have one available to you. If you are traveling with your own seat take some extra time to install your seat correctly. Install your car seat first and then pack the car. There is nothing worse than having to remove bags in order to get to hook or harness that is needed to set up a seat properly.

One final note, with many families taking advantage of lease agreements versus outwardly buying their car, using a rental car is a great way to avoid excessive miles on the family car. In addition, you might want to opt for a smaller SUV, minivan or car when traveling. When renting a car, choose one that might get better gas mileage and save some extra money for your vacation!
