No, it’s not Rod Stewart asking, silly, it’s your house! With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, consider adding a few romantic touches this year in addition to the cutesy stuff you always do for the kiddos. Oakton designer Ellen Smith of E. Smith Designs reminds us that lighting and aroma can really set the mood. “Candle light -- LOTS OF IT -- in votives along a mantel or different-sized hurricanes with thick/chunky candles is an inexpensive way to go. Scents throughout the house from candles or potpourri can be very romantic also.” Incorporating shimmery fabrics like silk and satin or draping a sensuous faux-fur throw over a chair or on the bed are also easy seasonal updates.

If you want to take it a step further with something year-round, consider a style change in your bedroom. “Shabby Chic and Cottage both tend to take on a romantic feel,” says Smith. Classic styles such as Old World and Victorian can also invoke amorous feelings. Or why not channel your inner glam girl and install a shimmery, sparkling chandelier in your bedroom or bath? Talk about instant luxury and romance.
Whether your change a little or a lot, change SOMETHING and spice things up. The return on your investment is sure to be worth it. Happy Valentine’s Day!
